Introductions to Statistics by Amharic series 1

What exactly is statistics?

Statistics can be defined in two ways. Statistics is defined formally as "the science of statistics deals with data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation."
  1. Statistics is defined intuitively as "the science of making decisions under uncertainty."
  2. That is, statistics is a tool that assists you in making decisions when you lack complete information.

Inferential statistics vs. descriptive statistics

Descriptive statistics is the process of taking data and describing its characteristics using measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode), dispersion measures (standard deviations, interquartile range), and so on.

However, inferential statistics is concerned with working with limited data to infer something about a larger question that we pose to ourselves a priori. This question cannot be answered definitively.
